1996 CADILLAC SEVILLE

The Seville is Cadillac's "international" sedan, aimed at buyers who want the performance and handling of an import plus the comfort and convenience features of a domestic luxury car.

It comes in two distinct varieties. The Seville Luxury Sedan (SLS) is biased toward a smooth ride and competes with such cars as the Lincoln Continental and Lexus LS 400. The Seville Touring Sedan (STS) offers sportier performance for drivers who might be considering the BMW 540i or Infiniti Q45.

Both Sevilles use the Northstar System, which is mostly made up of the 4.6-liter V8 engine and a 4-speed automatic transmission but also links the electronically controlled steering, suspension and antilock brake systems.

The SLS has 275 horsepower, while the STS packs 300 hp. The STS also uses lower-ratio gearing for quicker acceleration.

The SLS and STS each get a version of Cadillac's Road-Sensing Suspension, which automatically adjusts shock absorber firmness to road conditions. Both models feature all-speed traction control and dual airbags. The two Sevilles use different types of speed-sensitive power steering, which increase effort at higher speeds.

Inside, STS gets a new instrument panel and center console, while the SLS carries over last year's motif with only redesigned seats. Both models include leather upholstery, seat-position memory for the driver and steering-wheel controls for the automatic climate control and sound system.

The STS also comes with the Rainsense Wiper System, which uses sensors to detect rainfall on the windshield and automatically activates the wipers.

As in the previous year, the refinements of the base Eldo coupe were carried through to the Seville Luxury Sedan (SLS) wheel le those of the Eldorado Touring Coupe were carried through to the Seville Touring Sedan (STS). Again, the SLS was powered by the 275-horsepower Northstar 4.6-liter V-8 and the STS used the 300-horse Northstar engine. Both versions were paired with the 4T80-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission with viscous converter clutch,
